The high-intensity workout route is most definitely not the way to go if you’re out of shape or have medical issues. This type of workout is just too hard on your muscles, joints, and most importantly, your heart.
Understanding heart rate zones
After you know your maximum heart rate, you can calculate the difference between the maximum value and your resting heart rate. That difference, called the heart rate reserve, is a measure of, in a sense, how large a heart rate range you have to work with during your activities and workouts.
Most physiologists and trainers divide the heart rate reserve into various sub-ranges known as heart rate zones. Each zone is characterized by the level of exertion and how the body uses energy to power the activity.
Your Fitbit recognizes four heart rate zones and defines them by using percentages of your maximum heart rate (which, again, Fitbit calculates by subtracting your age from 220). The next few sections describe the four zones.
